Caldwell entering mayoral race

By Gordon Y.K. Pang, Advertiser Staff Writer

City Managing Director Kirk Caldwell yesterday said he will run for mayor when Mayor Mufi Hannemann leaves office, be it 2010 or 2012.

Caldwell, 56, plans to hold a fundraiser this month; tickets for the event say he will run for mayor in 2012, when Hannemann's second and final term expires.

Hannemann has set up an exploratory gubernatorial committee, however, and many suspect he will resign as mayor next summer to run for governor. Caldwell said if that happens, he will throw his hat in the ring for mayor then.

Caldwell joins City Prosecutor Peter Carlisle and City Councilman Donovan Dela Cruz as announced candidates for mayor.

An attorney by trade, Caldwell has been Hannemann's appointed second-in-command since last summer. From 2002 to 2008, the Manoa resident had been a key player as a member of the Democratic leadership in the state House of Representatives.

Caldwell last year chose to forgo re-election to the state House of Representatives and tried to run for an open City Council seat, but his candidacy was ruled invalid because he had not resigned from his state House seat by the deadline.

Caldwell said he is concentrating his efforts on being managing director. "But I want to start early," he said of his mayoral bid. "You need to raise a lot of money. It's a lofty goal running for mayor. It's a huge race."

Caldwell said it's important to announce his intentions now to mobilize his supporters.

He would not be the first managing director seeking to replace his old boss. In 1994, Managing Director Jeremy Harris campaigned successfully for mayor when Mayor Frank Fasi resigned to run unsuccessfully for governor against Ben Cayetano.

Dela Cruz, 36, announced over the weekend his plan to run for mayor next year. Dela Cruz, who cannot run for re-election because of the council term limit, said he has no doubt that Hannemann will run for governor next year.

Carlisle, 56, also said he will run when Hannemann leaves the mayor's office.

Two other potential mayoral candidates told The Advertiser yesterday they are still weighing their political options: City Council Chairman Todd Apo and University of Hawai'i engineering professor Panos Prevedorous, who ran for mayor last year.

Dear President Obama, Attorney General Holder, Trustee Farmer, Mr. Guttman, Ms. Neustadter, Judge Kevin Chang, Judge David Ezra, and All Concerned:

Due to new discoveries of FACTS related to this lawsuit, which I maintain is a "prior restraint" of my constitutional rights of Free Speech and a violation of Federal and State Anti-SLAPP statutes, I am adding the subject Exhibit.

Trustee Farmer and Mr. Guttman, in light of this mounting evidence of fraud, bad faith, breach of trust, breach of fiduciary duties, obstruction of justice, withholding and destruction of evidence, tax evasion, libel, slander, misprision of felony, undisclosed conflicts of interest, etc., provided by these many Exhibits and supporting documents, I again propose to you that we attempt to NEGOTIATE a GLOBAL SETTLEMENT in this case as well as for the unanswered bad faith and professional liability claims that I have previously submitted against you, your law firms and your undisclosed insurance carriers.

In case you have misplaced or destroyed these previous claims letters, you can more information online at:

http://www.kycbs.net/Claims-Branch-Kessner-Duca.htm

http://www.kycbs.net/Confessions.htm

http://www.kycbs.net/Whistler.htm

If you still refuse to enter into confidential settlement negotiations in a good-faith effort to settle these matters, then I ask that you perform your mandated review of this Exhibit in accordance with Judge Ezra's Order and advise me, whether or not, it contains any so-called "protected subject matter" as defined by the arbitrator in this case, Judith Neustadter Fuqua.

If I do not receive a response within 15 days, I will consider this to be yet another act of bad faith on the part of you and your insurance carriers, and that you will not object to any future Motions that I may make to reopen this case.

Very truly yours,

Bobby N. Harmon, CPCU, ARM

Obama wins Hawaii in a landslide

From The Honolulu Advertiser staff

U.S. Sen. Barack Obama, who was born and raised in Hawai'i, won the state's Democratic presidential caucus in a landslide yesterday. Obama had 28,347 votes, or 76%, to U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton's 8,835 votes, or 24%, with 100% of the precincts reporting....

Hawai'i Democrats turned out in record numbers at the party's caucuses to help settle the nomination fight between Obama and Clinton of New York.

Obama ran television and radio advertisements in the Islands and talked about his local roots to help distinguish himself from Clinton, who sent her daughter, Chelsea Clinton, to campaign for her in the state.

The caucuses drew a surge of new Democrats, including many who registered to vote and joined the party just last night.

The party had printed 17,000 ballots and volunteers at many caucus sites ran out of ballots and blue party membership cards and had to improvise with notebook paper....

"I trust that the people of Hawai'i understand that this is a very unique year," said Florence Kong Kee, the party's political director.

Brian Schatz, a local Obama volunteer and former state representative for Makiki, said it appeared that last night's turnout may have exceeded the local Obama campaign's estimate of 15,000 to 18,000 people.

"It's a gift this election season to have such excellent choices on the Democratic side," said Schatz, a likely candidate for state party chairman in May. "We think the more people who come in to caucus is better for the Obama campaign."

State House Majority Leader Kirk Caldwell, D-24th (Manoa), a Clinton volunteer, described the turnout as "unbelievable."...

Obama, who was born here and graduated from Punahou School, appeared to be attracting many of the new Democrats last night, while Clinton was stronger with traditional Democrats....

Deloris Guttman, of Downtown, was trying the caucus for the first time. "I think Hawai'i is going to count this year," she said. "Before, we didn't matter."...

Presidential candidates who receive at least 15% of the vote in the preference poll will be eligible for a share of 20 of the state's 29 delegates to the Democratic National Convention in Denver. Last night's caucuses will determine how those 20 delegates will be awarded.
