KBH, INC. ACQUIRES KEAUHOU BEACH HOTEL
CORNERSTONE OF KEAUHOU RESORT
KEAUHOU, HAWAII - KBH, Inc., a subsidiary of Bishop Holdings, Inc. - the for-profit development arm of Kamehameha Schools, announced today that it has
acquired the 311-room Keauhou Beach Hotel located within its Keauhou Resort
on the island of Hawaii. KBH, Inc. anticipates a seamless transition and
Outrigger Hotels & Resorts will continue to manage hotel operations.
Greg Chun, Keauhou Resort President and General Manager commented,
"Outrigger Keauhou Beach Hotel serves as the resort gateway and with this
acquisition we bring home the cornerstone of Keauhou. We want to create a
business model where cultural sites and educational activities restore Hawaiian
presence within our resort."
The 2,400-acre Keauhou Resort Master Plan, a product of two years of community discussion and research, envisions a Community Learning Center, a gathering place with venues for Hawaiian cultural enrichment programs and place-based educational programs, alongside resort hotels, residential properties and heritage sites.
"We applaud and admire the vision for what the Outrigger Keauhou Beach Hotel can become a world-class resort hotel located in a distinctively Hawaiian resort that sets the standards for excellent service, and for providing guests a unique island-style experience," stated Outrigger Enterprises' President and CEO David Carey.
Visible changes at Keauhou Resort have already emerged with the re-opening of the Sheraton Keauhou Bay Resort & Spa in late 2004 and the demolition of the Kona Lagoon Hotel. Plans call for restoration or stabilization of two significant heiau and the protection of another 100-plus acres of archaeological sites scattered throughout the resort.
"Today, Keauhou Resort is a stronger community much more in tune with its tremendous heritage," stated Chun. "The resort is deeply committed to protecting, preserving and celebrating Hawaiian culture."
Keauhou Resort is a 2,400-acre master-planned resort community located five miles south of Kailua-Kona. The resort includes Outrigger Keauhou Beach Resort, Sheraton Keauhou Bay Resort & Spa, the 22.9-acre Keauhou Shopping Center, two golf courses, timeshare, residential and resort condominiums and single-family residences.
Outrigger Hotels & Resorts assumed management of the Keauhou Beach Hotel in late 2001 following an extensive renovation. More recently, the hotel began a series of enhancements in 2005 that included new restaurant décor, refreshed public areas, new interior finishes, upgraded room and suite amenities and enhanced landscaping.
Terms of the hotel acquisition were not made public.
