An $8.4 million investment scheme rocks Hawaii's upper crust

Ronald Rewald shuffled along the 26th-floor corridor of his former Honolulu office building one morning in early September, looking dazed and uncomfortable. No wonder. The once prominent "international investor" was manacled hand and foot and accompanied by two guards, who watched as he searched for records that bankruptcy officials might have overlooked. None could be found.

Until this summer there had been few hints of trouble in paradise. Over the past five years, Rewald, 41, had persuaded some 400 investors, many of them Hawaiian plutocrats and VIPS, to pour $13 million into his flimflam firm. As recently as last June, he had been a local bigwig himself, owner of the Hawaii Polo Club and hobnobber with Governor and Mrs. George Ariyoshi. But in August an Oahu grand jury indicted him for theft; claims of nearly $8.4 million have been filed against him.

Pronounced Bankruptcy Trustee Thomas Hayes: "The money is gone."

Aloha and goodbye: compared with his native Milwaukee, Honolulu must have seemed like Fantasy Island. He came in 1977 to start a new life. He promptly hooked up with Real Estate Salesman Sunlin Wong and created an investment firm grandly named Bishop, Baldwin, Rewald, Dillingham & Wong. Rewald and Wong, however, were the only unmisleading names on the company's letterhead. The others were included to convince investors that the firm was connected to Hawaii's old-line, blue-chip Bishops, Baldwins and Dillinghams, which it was not. Says one local businessman: "It was as if he arrived in Manhattan and had a firm called Rockefeller, Harriman, Cabot, Forbes & Roosevelt."

However brazen the bluff, the name-dropping worked. To prospective investors, Rewald looked gilt-edged by association: he bought a $950,000 house previously owned by deposed Cambodian Strongman Lon Nol and became chummy with Jack Lord, star of the 1968-80 Hawaii Five-O TV series. "Investors" included Lieut. General Arnold Braswell, the Air Force's retiring Pacific commander (more than $100,000), and John Kindschi, the former CIA chief in Honolulu ($185,000).

In reality, B.B.R.D. & W. made few actual investments: part of a travel agency here, a piece of a car dealership there. The "business" was little more than a high-stakes chain letter that lasted two or three years: earlier investors were paid dividends out of funds forked over by later ones. Of $1.3 million taken in last June, for instance, $326,000 in "interest" was paid out to earlier investors. But that same month a quarter of a million dollars was siphoned off by Rewald. He used the money to pay for exotic travel, his children's full-time tutor, and upkeep for two Hawaiian ranches, where he stabled his 17 or more polo ponies.

When state regulators became aware in July of the firm's false claim that it was FDIC-insured, Rewald's world began to unravel. The IRS and Securities and Exchange Commission started probing Rewald's affairs early this year. State officials issued investigative subpoenas in late July after Rewald's firm published Capital Flight from Hong Kong and How Hawaii Can Benefit, a report so transparently amateurish that it instantly raised eyebrows in Honolulu's financial circles.

A few days later Rewald checked into a Waikiki hotel and slashed his wrists. Wong is in Honolulu and is cooperating with the federal investigation. Since his hospital recovery, Rewald has been in custody and remains in Honolulu's Oahu prison in lieu of $10 million bail.

2 former staffers oppose Kubo

Included among an outpouring of support from judges, lawyers and prosecutors for the nomination of former U.S. Attorney Edward Kubo as a state judge were two harsh and critical letters written by assistant U.S. attorneys who used to work for Kubo.

The letters, from Assistant U.S. Attorneys Mark Inciong and Thomas Muehleck, were among dozens sent to the state Senate Judiciary and Government Operations Committee about Kubo's nomination to serve as a Circuit Court judge.

A hearing on Kubo's nomination was held by the committee Thursday and featured uniformly positive and glowing testimony from witnesses.

Neither Inciong nor Muehleck testified at the hearing, which was halted while Kubo was still testifying and will resume Thursday.

Numerous dignitaries of the legal profession, as well as political figures including Mayors Mufi Hannemann of Honolulu and William Kenoi of the Big Island, wrote to recommend Kubo as a judge.

Inciong said in his letter that Kubo improperly inserted the U.S. Attorney's office into a state court domestic violence case that involved two agents with the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, or ICE.

In that case, ICE Special Agent Evelyn Delos Reyes Ramo obtained a restraining order in November 2008 against her former boyfriend, who worked as an immigration enforcement agent.

The restraining order, which is in effect until May, was granted after Ramo alleged that Jonathan Winnop threatened to kill her on multiple occasions and physically abused her by "punching, kicking, slapping ... spitting on me ... choking me with his hands, holding a knife to me ... and put(ting) his foot on my throat until I would pass out."

Kubo's office filed a "friend of the court" brief in the case in March 2009, which Inciong alleged was an improper attempt to "ease the conditions" of the restraining order against Winnop.

"The filing reeked on several levels and the true reason for the filing has yet to be revealed," Inciong wrote to the committee.

"It is ironic, to say the least, that if Mr. Kubo would be appointed to the bench it is my understanding that he would begin at the Family Court, a place where, less than a year ago, he attempted to intervene on behalf of a domestic batterer," Inciong wrote.

Kubo is expected to discuss Inciong's letter in testimony to the committee. He declined to discuss either letter written by his former employees.

State Sen. Sam Slom, R-8th (Kähala, Hawai'i Kai), a Kubo supporter, said Kubo testified at some length Thursday about Muehleck's letter, but said little about Inciong, other than to describe him as a friend and supporter of Muehleck.

Muehleck, a longtime federal prosecutor who has specialized in narcotics cases, disagreed with Kubo's policies at the U.S. Attorney's office, Kubo told the committee.

When Muehleck, a U.S. Army Reserve officer, returned to work in 2008 from a yearlong deployment to Iraq, he was upset to learn that a parking space he had previously used at the federal High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area offices here was no longer available to him, Kubo told the committee.

He was so angry about the issue and other matters that at one point he said about Kubo, "If I had a hand grenade now I would frag him," Slom said Kubo testified.

Kubo reported the incident as a workplace violence issue and tried to fire Muehleck when the prosecutor was in the middle of a narcotics and gambling prosecution trial.

Muehleck hired a private attorney and fought the dismissal after Kubo banished him from the U.S. Attorney's office. He worked for a year in temporary space inside the FBI office here and has since been reinstated.

Muehleck and his attorney, Charles Kleintop, have declined to discuss the matter.

In his letter to the Judiciary Committee, Muehleck wrote, "I can say without reservation that in my opinion Mr. Kubo is not qualified to serve as a judge."

He questioned Kubo's leadership abilities and knowledge of the law, saying, "Mr. Kubo has spent the last eight years building his resume at the expense of the people of this (federal) district."

Those letters were balanced against a near-avalanche of letters recommending Kubo for the judgeship.

Kubo, a Republican, served as U.S. Attorney for eight years but was replaced last year by Florence Nakakuni, a career prosecutor in the U.S. Attorney's office here.

State Sen. Brian Taniguchi, D-10th (Mänoa, McCully), the chairman of the Senate Judiciary and Government Operations Committee, said senators have some concerns about Kubo's nomination. He said his staff will look into the criticisms before the next hearing.

As president, Bush senior gloried in the Gulf War and the 1989 invasion of Panama, both cast as strikes for democracy–even if the dictators attacked were former friends. Two catchphrases recur in the family resume: “arms deals” and “clandestine operations.” A third recurring association would be “cover-up.”

George W. Bush was a willing recipient of the inheritance–witness the CIA and BCCI ties of some who finance him, from Arbusto to Harken Energy a decade later. For example, James Bath, who invested fifty thousand dollars in the 1979 and 1989 Arbusto partnerships, probably do so as U.S. business representative for rich Saudi investors Salem bin Laden and Khalid bin Mahfouz (Osama bin Laden’s brother-in-law). Both men were involved with the Bank of Credit and Commerce International, the rogue bank and occasional CIA front known for financing arms deals – indeed, bin Mahfouz owned 20 percent of its stock.

Bath, who made his fortune investing for the two Saudis, was a colorful Texan – and then some. According to former Houston Post reporter Pete Brewton, Bath was “an asset of the CIA, reportedly recruited by George Bush himself” in 1976 to keep the Agency up to date on Saudi activities.

A decade later, Harken Energy, the company willing to handsomely buy out George W.’s crumbling oil and gas business, had its own CIA connections. Chairman Alan Quasha was the son of a Philippine lawyer connected to the Nugan Hand Bank, a notorious Australian bank closely linked to the CIA.

Equally to the point, 17.6 percent of Harken’s stock was owned by Abdullah Bakhsh, another Saudi magnate reported by some to be representing Khalid bin Mahfouz.

A U.S. Senate subcommittee investigating BCCI in 1992 reported on how the bank bought friendship and favors from politicians around the world; details of the investigation were published in two books: False Profits: The Inside Story of BCCI, the World’s Most Corrupt Financial Empire, by Peter Truell, and The Outlaw Bank: A Wild Ride into the Secret Heart of BCCI, by Jonathan Beaty and S.C. Gwynne. According to the latter, the story of the Bush involvement in the BCCI scandal involved the “trails that branched, crossed one another or came to unexpected dead ends.”...

As we have seen, Jeb Bush began his business career in Miami collaborating with Cubans tied to the CIA or to kindred intelligence agencies in pre-Castro Cuba. He socialized with Adbur Sakhia, BCCI’s Miami branch manager and later its top U.S. Official. Jeb Bush’s partners and early associates included a number of Cuban emigres with CIA, Nicaraguan ‘contra, or Batista-era Cuban intelligence connections.

To say that armaments, clandestine operations, and money-laundering banks recur in the history of the Walker-Bush family is no exaggeration at all. No other presidents have been so caught up in this kind of foreign policy. And the Bushes’ preoccupations are not clear until you consider the whole dynasty. It is the dynastic aspect that truly reveals the pattern – the clandestine behavior over multiple generations....

The only differences was that my Secret classified Signal Corps Communication Military Occupation Service {MOS} duties with cryptography radio codes, was diverted once arriving in country to Vietnam. I was given a special assignment to a Airborne - Ranger covert unit in the Central Highlands, operating far away from the main Division stationed North at Camp Eagle - Phu Bai, South Vietnam. The rogue unit was involved in Illegal insertions into Cambodia, as well as earlier legendary fire-fights under Hamburger Hill and Fire Support Base Ripcord with members being sworn to "secrecy" due to several factors {In Retrospect....}.

The Paris Peace Accords, after the 1968 TET Offense, with secret U.S. Government negotiations were being conducted by Henry Kissinger with the North Vietnamese Representatives. The area between Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos, with Hmong Tribesman / Drug War Lord, Gen. Vang Pao, was operating secretly with the U.S. special forces to contain the NVA supply routes into South Vietnam, as well as rogue Operations made famous with the Air America covert drugs - for arms shipments to undermine the Communist in Southeast Asia. I was involved in the last big U.S. Military trained Republic of South Vietnam Army JOINT U.S. battle against the seasoned NVA under covert code: Operation Lam Song 719 in Military I Corps, toward the Laotian border and the DMZ...... involving the 101st Airborne Air Assault Group. I was on a remote jungle fire- support base named Tomahawk within the fame NVA - VC supply route near the Ashua Valley.

The U.S. trained South Vietnamese Army was a complete failure and no match for the tuff North Vietnamese under General Giap, who defeated the French Foreign Legion Army. Many of the French soldiers were buried in the ancient Vietnamese city of HUE, facing toward France. With this brief history, which parallels Scott Barnes, our unit known as "The Stand Alone Battalion" {3rd / 506th} famous during World War 11 with General Anthony McAliffe reply, "NUTS", to surrender to the Germans at the Battle of Bastogne.

Our unit was the first of the 101st Airborne Divsion to fold down our colors at formal Military festivities at Camp Eagle an return to Ft. Cambell, Kentucky. I was re-assigned to another in Vietnam for a short 2 months, by choice, after being promised to stay with a rear echelon unit for the remainder of my military tour of duty to get an early discharge at Ft. Lewis, Washington.....the same out processing for Scott Barnes. I was recruited to sign up at Ft. Lewis with offers of additional training, possible OCS school, and other tempting cash bonuses which I turned down and received my DD-214 Discharge papers from the Military.

Scott Barnes, I believe, took these U.S. Military offers but was later "set-up" by the U.S. Military Command to "discharge" his services back into Civilian life while promising to use him later in secret missions back to Vietnam and the Golden Triangle area...... since he "visited" the region prior to his military service as a young teen-age boy and was familiar with Laotian General Vang Pao and his U.S. supported drug lord Hmong Tribesman, fighting the Vietnamese communist and the Khmer Rogues in Cambodia.

Barnes uses his Military Police background and Military Intelligence links to work for the Californian authorities involved in Motor cycle gangs and Mexican drugs coming across the U.S. borders. He once again is set-up, to manipulate his civilian employment, while awaiting his "orders" from his former Military contact after returning back to work in the private sector and forget about the Vietnam War.

Again, in retrospect, I believe many returning U.S. Military Veterans, like myself, who served their Tour of Duty, while being trained in expensive U.S. Military Intelligence schools or Covert Military operations are recruited for their dedicated "Patriotism", background for loyalty, and their physical training work ethics....which was my forte during my High School & College years during the Vietnam War.

The irony of things is that I believe the War protestors on many College campuses during the unpopular Vietnam conflict, became a natural silent "recruiting" breeding grounds for the ROTC and local Military Recruiting offices, similar to former CIA agent, Ronald Rewald's personal profile during college which later involves Scott Barnes.

I believe, looking back, my Civilian employment jobs were being monitored to discourage my Civilian life to force my return back into the Military....especially after the fall of Saigon in 1975 with the Political fall-outs for Nixon with Watergate, which later implicates the CIA with U.S. Senator Frank Church's Intelligence Committee "investigations" documented under THE FAMILY JEWELS REPORT.

Hawaii U.S. Senator, Daniel Inouye, becomes the first Chairman of the New Intelligence Committee Commission between 1975 - 1979. This is the exact same time frame that the Hawaiian Sovereignty Movement became active in Hawaii against vested U.S. Military presence in the Hawaiian Islands, documented with the U.S. Military target range being used for tiny Koolauwe Island, prior, during, and after World War 11.

During the Vietnam War, Hawaii was a staging area for U.S. Troops being deployed and trained, using Guam as another staging area. The anti-war movement in Hawaii was very strong with much resentments between the Civilian local Hawaiians and the Military personal.

During the late 1960s, the Native American Indian Movement {AIM} was active with Indian leaders Russell Means and Leonard Peltier on Pine Ridge Reservation. The California - Mexican Agriculture Labor movement under Cesar Chavez was also a political foundation for the Hawaiian Sovereignty Movement Activist, which in 1978, became a Hawaii Political watershed year with Government Officials under the opportunistic 1978 Hawaii Constitutional Convention and the political creation for the Office of Hawaiian Affairs.......forged by former U.S. Military Intelligence personal from World War 11, William Paty, and Hawaii Governor, George Ariyoshi, another former U.S. Military Intelligence personal {Translator after World War 11}.

During this same time frame, Hawaii U.S. Senators, Daniel Inouye {Watergate Commission / Iran Contra Chairman} and Sparky Matsunaga {Commission for Wartime Relocation & Internment of Civilians - helped pardon Tokyo Rose} from the famed 442 Military Regiment, were both involved in the 1954 Hawaii Democratic Legislature Revolution, which became the beginning of the end for the vast political influence in the Hawaiian Islands for THE BIG FIVE COMPANIES linked to Hawaii Agriculature and Land investments for the Republican Big Business interests for the Hawaii Union members.

During 1978 to 1983, Bishop, Baldwin, REWALD, Dillingham, & Wong was created in conjunction with the 1978 Hawaii Constitutional Convention, again, involving both "inside" Federal and State of Hawaii officials, with Military Intelligence personal. This same Political cabals, were earlier involved in the secret Hawaii - Australia Nugan Hand Bank International covert ops {1973 - 1978} under rogue CIA Director Richard Helms and William Colby, linked to Vietnam, the Golden Triangle, and the POLITICAL SENSITIVE POW- MIA issues, which later involves CIA Director George H. I also believe that several NFL players from Hawaii, including my childhood friend from Lanikai, Oahu, Hawaii, Rockne Freitas {Detroit Lion - Tampa Bay Bucs}, returned back to Hawaii in 1978 an became involved in Hawaii Politics with his legendary status as a Native Hawaiian son from Kamehameha Schools - Kapalama campus and having a long, successful career in Professional football....during the height of the Vietnam War.

The other famous Hawaii NFL football player involved in Hawaii politics was Arnold Morgado from Punahou, Michigan State, and the University of Hawaii - Kansas City Chiefs {1977 - 1980}....the same period for Lamar Hunt, the owner, and CIA scapegoat, Ronald Rewald, a journeyman Kansas City running back with a bogus degree from Marquette University, a Jesuit Catholic college, which was the same religious background for former rogue Irish CIA Director William Casey from the Catholic University of America in Washington DC.

I believe Ronald Rewald, Scott Barnes, and myself, had these same Government "loyal" profile traits to be "set-up", followed, and used as Political pawns, for blatant Illegal & reckless Government Covert special Black Operations, for "Privatized" Opportunistic Investors, linked to U.S. Government agencies, hiding under National Security, Classified Documents, and the All - American Patriot Act, to justify U.S. Political Fear Mongering in Washington DC into the Middle East for the Financial Global War on Terrorism for exclusive secular Foreign {PNAC} / Domestic {AIPAC} vested special interests with a mislead American Public case for War in Iraq.

This involves a partner named Robert Pitner and Don Hanson and a bankrupted vintage California Winery {Joseph Mattews Winery} with an exclusive B & B business {Hennessey House} in Napa. My friend lives in the area and recalled the incident which was reported in the California news journals.

This also involves fraudulent land investments in Hawaii and the Puna Connection with a California investor mystery title deed front named Robert & Lois Mathias....the front for the Hawaiian Chow Estate {tmk: 3-1-4-1-042} adjacent to the Lava Tree State Public Park {Public forgery - E. Pacific island swindles

OFFICIALS of several Pacific island governments have been victimized by smooth-talking swindlers, a United Nations agency reports. The South Pacific office of the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific says white-collar crime and fraud have reached epidemic proportions.

Here in Hawaii we're supposed to be more sophisticated. But it was only a few years ago that a fellow named Ronald Rewald fleeced a number of people who should have known better.

Want to know a few of the results of the move towards the so-called "Global Economy" which has become the nirvana Corporate America seeks? Be very careful, you might not like what you find.

According to U.N. documents, 4 million women a year are sold into sexual slavery around the world. Understand, these documents aren't discussing some Mid- Eastern potentate's harem. What we're talking about is 500,000 women "imported" into Western Europe and 90,000 into Italy, alone. These women are kidnapped and sold into prostitution for the gratification of men like the late Larry Hilblom, the founder of DHL courier service. Hilblom, it should be added, also participated in the kidnapping and sales of many young women, as well.

The majority of these women, who are mostly just young girls, come from the countries once known as client states of the old Soviet Union, such as Albania and the Ukraine. In fact, the selling of girls for the sexual gratification of wealthy men has become a major export for many of the supposedly free nations from the former Soviet bloc.

Amazingly, many of these women are moved through our ally Israel. The reason Israel is a major center for these atrocities is that Israel has absolutely no laws against the sale or ownership of other humans. Now there is wonderful reason to continue our hundreds of billions of dollars in foreign aid to this moral back water of a country.

The main reason that these crimes can so easily occur is the demand by the world's corporations that there be few or no inspections at national borders and that, with corporations buying up governments just like ours at bargain prices, they own the decisions to investigate crimes and, of course, see no reason to investigate the very crimes they, themselves, are committing.

Now, of course, America is immune from these charges, aren't we. I mean, this is the country where politicians spend their entire careers shouting about their fairy tale world of "family values", right? Our government would immediately spring into action should even a hint of this crime appear within our borders, right?

Wrong, of course. Thai women were imported into the United States and forced into sexual slavery in New York, Houston and Toronto, according to stories in the LA Times, New York Times and Dallas Morning News.

How long will it take the corporate prostitutes in Washington, D.C., to even acknowledge these crimes? How many conservatives do you think are going to stand up in protest against these horrors against humanity? How many will demand hundreds of billions of dollars to fight these crimes against humanity? What is less than none?

Unless America wakes up to these violations against humanity and demands action from the blow hards in office, nothing, whatsoever, will ever happen. Why? Because the victims do not fall within the parameters these vile people respect. These are young girls from foreign countries that don't contribute to American political coffers, nor are they related to anyone who owns enough property to matter to American politicians. If they were all Republican, Christian, wealthy wives and daughters of campaign contributors then this would be a problem of cosmic proportion. They aren't, so the problem is ignored.

These crimes against women are only the most extreme examples of the damage that is being done to people all over the world in the name of corporate profits. Add in the disease ridden fruit coming into America from countries which have little in the way of health and safety laws and food covered with the pesticides that America banned so Corporate America sold its stock to the same Third World countries now supplying us with our daily fruits and vegetables and grains.

Consider the effects that corrupt rulers the world over have regarding the financial health of your retirement and investments and, if the idiots who hate government safety nets have their way, your Social Security. Consider the damage another episode like the Hunt brothers attempt to corner the silver market would have on America if it were done by a nation or groups of nations. Finally, consider the costs of a simple computer virus invading the systems which control what will be the world's financial institution.

You, as an individual, have absolutely nothing to gain in a global economy. In fact, you will be the loser if you continue to listen to the lies and do not begin fighting the mutation of your world into a world corporation where the wealthy would rule through unlimited economic power. As in all things, it is your choice but your inaction will affect billions of people for centuries to come.
