DHL to cut 9,500 jobs and
close US service centers
FRANKFURT, Germany – Deutsche Post AG will close all of its DHL Express service centers, cut 9,500 jobs in the United States and eliminate U.S.-only domestic shipping by land and air, the company said Monday, citing heavy losses and fierce competition.
The Bonn-based company said that new round of cuts are on top of another 5,400 job cuts it already announced and blamed heavy losses at the unit, which competes with rivals UPS Inc. and FedEx Corp.
The cuts are part of a wider plan to curtail operations in the U.S., including domestic ground and delivery services though its international shipping won't be affected. The express unit currently employs some 18,000 workers.
Part of the plan calls for the halt to domestic shipping by Jan. 30, the company said after it closes all of its ground hubs.
"The retained U.S. international express network with a total of 3,000 to 4,000 employees will be tailored to the needs of the group's international express service customers," the company said in a statement. "All international shipments into the U.S. will still be delivered, while 99 percent of the outbound shipments will be picked up."
The move is expected to reduce operating costs at the U.S. Express unit from $5.4 billion (4.2 billion euros) to less than $1 billion (770 million euros).
"The international express offering in the U.S. will be maintained on today's levels and the region will remain an integral part of DHL's global Express network," the company added.
Shares of Deutsche Post were up 4.2 percent at 9.77 euros ($12.60) in Frankfurt trading.

DHL Expanding Operations
by Gareth Powell, China Economic Review
This story comes in two parts. The first is straight, factual and important. The second, straight, factual and unimportant but still fascinating.
Express and logistics provider DHL has launched operations at a $3.6 million logistics facility at the Waigaoqiao Bonded Logistics Zone (WBLZ) in Shanghai, as part of the further expansion of its forwarding operations on the mainland.
The new warehouse and logistics facility boosts DHL Global Forwarding’s current investment in China to $30 million. The DHL group’s total investment in the past few years is around $315 million. DHL Global Forwarding will also invest an additional $20 million in the next few years to further enhance the company’s network infrastructure, staffing, products and services to meet anticipated growth in China.
Peter Landsiedel, Asia Pacific chief executive of DHL Global Forwarding, said the company had been experiencing 50 pct annual growth in China in recent years and it expected continued levels of growth this year...
Recent investments by DHL Global Forwarding in China include warehouses in free trade zones in Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen as well as facilities in Beijing, Nanjing, Shanghai Pudong, Songjiang, Jiuting, and Shenzhen Nanshan.
All of which is interesting and important. Then there are the origins of DHL and the scandal that surrounded one of its founders which is also very interesting but not directly important.
Formally, DHL is a Deutsche Post company that provides international shipping of documents and freight as well as contract logistics. The company was founded in 1969 by Adrian Dalsey, Larry Hillblom, and Robert Lynn; the initials D, H & L of the founders’ last names form the company name.
The trio initially provided a courier service between the mainland U.S. and Hawaii and expanded the business from there. In 1998, Deutsche Post began acquiring shares in DHL, finally reaching majority ownership in 2001, and completely purchasing it in 2002.
The joker in the pack was Larry Hillblom (1943 - 1995) who swept a wide swathe through South East Asia and was well known to most of the journalists covering the area. After being involved in the successful launch of DHL he moved to Saipan, and then traveled around and started several businesses and development projects in Hawaii, Vietnam and the Philippines.
He was an aircraft enthusiast, and flew several vintage aircraft. On May 21, 1955 Hillblom’s seaplane crashed on a flight from Pagan Island to Saipan. His body was never recovered.
Hillblom’s will stated that the University of California at San Francisco (UCSF) would receive his estate. However, Hillblom had lots of children who were told that he was daddy. Under Saipan law, illegitimate children born after a will has been drawn up are entitled to make a claim on the estate.
There were dozens of claimants. Almost all represented by Saipan lawyers. As Hillblom’s body was not recovered in the crash, there was no DNA that could be used to determine paternity.
Someone, no one knows who, had scrubbed his house in Saipan clean. Everything important had been buried. There was no DNA.
It was then asked how the DNA of the children compared to each others. Since the women were in different countries, if their children shared certain DNA markers, they arguably have the same father. It was ultimately determined that a Vietnamese child, two Filipino children and a child from Guam were fathered by Hillblom.
In the final settlement, each of the four children received $90 million (about $50 million after taxes and fees), while the remaining $240 million went to the University of California for medical research.
The lawyers on Saipan, almost every single one having been involved in the lawsuits at one time or another, wanted the settlement day declared a public holiday.

The Global Economy's Investment
In Prostitution
Want to know a few of the results of the move towards the so-called "Global Economy" which has become the nirvana Corporate America seeks? Be very careful, you might not like what you find.
According to U.N. documents, 4 million women a year are sold into sexual slavery around the world. Understand, these documents aren't discussing some Mid- Eastern potentate's harem. What we're talking about is 500,000 women "imported" into Western Europe and 90,000 into Italy, alone. These women are kidnapped and sold into prostitution for the gratification of men like the late Larry Hilblom, the founder of DHL courier service. Hilblom, it should be added, also participated in the kidnapping and sales of many young women, as well.
The majority of these women, who are mostly just young girls, come from the countries once known as client states of the old Soviet Union, such as Albania and the Ukraine. In fact, the selling of girls for the sexual gratification of wealthy men has become a major export for many of the supposedly free nations from the former Soviet bloc.
Amazingly, many of these women are moved through our ally Israel. The reason Israel is a major center for these atrocities is that Israel has absolutely no laws against the sale or ownership of other humans. Now there is wonderful reason to continue our hundreds of billions of dollars in foreign aid to this moral back water of a country.
The main reason that these crimes can so easily occur is the demand by the world's corporations that there be few or no inspections at national borders and that, with corporations buying up governments just like ours at bargain prices, they own the decisions to investigate crimes and, of course, see no reason to investigate the very crimes they, themselves, are committing.
Now, of course, America is immune from these charges, aren't we. I mean, this is the country where politicians spend their entire careers shouting about their fairy tale world of "family values", right? Our government would immediately spring into action should even a hint of this crime appear within our borders, right?
Wrong, of course. Thai women were imported into the United States and forced into sexual slavery in New York, Houston and Toronto, according to stories in the LA Times, New York Times and Dallas Morning News.
How long will it take the corporate prostitutes in Washington, D.C., to even acknowledge these crimes? How many conservatives do you think are going to stand up in protest against these horrors against humanity? How many will demand hundreds of billions of dollars to fight these crimes against humanity? What is less than none?
Unless America wakes up to these violations against humanity and demands action from the blow hards in office, nothing, whatsoever, will ever happen. Why? Because the victims do not fall within the parameters these vile people respect. These are young girls from foreign countries that don't contribute to American political coffers, nor are they related to anyone who owns enough property to matter to American politicians. If they were all Republican, Christian, wealthy wives and daughters of campaign contributors then this would be a problem of cosmic proportion. They aren't, so the problem is ignored.
These crimes against women are only the most extreme examples of the damage that is being done to people all over the world in the name of corporate profits. Add in the disease ridden fruit coming into America from countries which have little in the way of health and safety laws and food covered with the pesticides that America banned so Corporate America sold its stock to the same Third World countries now supplying us with our daily fruits and vegetables and grains.
Consider the effects that corrupt rulers the world over have regarding the financial health of your retirement and investments and, if the idiots who hate government safety nets have their way, your Social Security. Consider the damage another episode like the Hunt brothers attempt to corner the silver market would have on America if it were done by a nation or groups of nations. Finally, consider the costs of a simple computer virus invading the systems which control what will be the world's financial institution.
You, as an individual, have absolutely nothing to gain in a global economy. In fact, you will be the loser if you continue to listen to the lies and do not begin fighting the mutation of your world into a world corporation where the wealthy would rule through unlimited economic power. As in all things, it is your choice but your inaction will affect billions of people for centuries to come.
