Tokio Marine and Fire Insurance may have been old, but it showed it could learn new tricks. Japan's oldest and largest property/casualty insurance company, Tokio Marine merged with Nichido Fire and Marine to create Tokio Marine & Nichido Fire Insurance, which operates as a subsidiary of holding company Millea Holdings.

The merger created the largest insurance sales network in Japan. Through Tokio Marine & Nichido and other subsidiaries, Millea Holdings provides marine, fire, property/casualty, personal accident, and auto insurance.

The company also offers securities through a joint venture with online brokerage bigwig Charles Schwab.

Millea Holdings is allied with the Mitsubishi industrial group.
